When The Grass Seems Greener

by John P. Toomey

We all have heard the saying “the grass is not always greener on the other side and that it is green where you water it.” There is a lot of truth in that statement, but I would like to add something to it. The grass is greener because it has more poop for fertilizer.

Satan loves nothing better than a discontented believer. When we are discontent, we are too distracted to see anything other than what we feel like we want. When we are distracted, we often do not see the work of Satan going on right in front of our face. We can’t see the forest for all of the trees so to speak. Perhaps the problem can be found in how we define “need” and “want”. What we need is a roof over our head, clothes on our back, food in our stomach, a job, and transportation to that job. Almost everything else is really a want disguised as a need.

1 Timothy 6:6-10 in the King James says: “6 But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. 8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. 9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. 10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

I encourage you today to take a moment to examine your life. We were made by God to crave, but to crave Him. Let’s keep our focus on the only area of life that it is Biblical to be discontent. That area is how close we walk with God. We should always press forward toward a deeper and more meaningful relationship with Jesus Christ.

Remember, if the grass seems greener on the other side, be on the lookout for a lot more poop for fertilizer.
