Are You Ready to Vote? 10 Principles to Consider

Navigating the complexities of political choices as a Christian can be challenging. We are called to be ambassadors for Christ (II Cor. 5:20), representing His teachings and values in every aspect of our lives, including voting. While no candidate or party will ever be a perfect reflection of biblical standards, we can make informed decisions that support godly principles. Below are critical factors to consider when deciding which candidate to support.

Evaluating a Candidate’s Personal Life

A leader’s personal life is one of the strongest indicators of their potential to uphold biblical principles.

 1.  Moral Integrity

A candidate whose life is marked by adultery, deceit, drunkenness, or other ungodly behaviors should be viewed with caution. The Bible teaches that “by their fruits ye shall know them” (Matt. 7:20), emphasizing that a person’s actions reflect their character. A leader displaying a life of sin is unlikely to make decisions rooted in biblical wisdom.

2.  Faith and Church Involvement

A candidate’s association with a church and their public declarations of faith are telling. Are they part of a church that upholds biblical teachings? If a politician speaks of their faith but aligns with religious beliefs that contradict Scripture, it signals inconsistency. The Bible urges believers to “prove all things; hold fast that which is good” (I Thess. 5:21). A candidate’s commitment to true biblical doctrine is essential for making decisions that honor God.

The Power of Words: Trustworthiness and Consistency

The Bible underscores the value of honesty and reliability. “Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight” (Prov. 12:22).

3.  Reliability and Consistency

Does the candidate keep their promises, or do they shift positions to gain favor with different audiences? A double-tongued leader may struggle with integrity. The ability to stand firm in one’s words shows not only a commitment to truth but also a readiness to face challenges with unwavering moral courage.

4.  Political Correctness vs. Biblical Principles

Is the candidate willing to prioritize what is popular over what is right? A leader who changes their stance for public approval lacks the steadfastness required to uphold biblical values. Proverbs 29:25 reminds us, “The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe.” This principle is critical when choosing a leader who will defend what is righteous over what is merely convenient.

Moral Stances on Key Issues

Evaluating where a candidate stands on key moral issues provides insight into their adherence to biblical principles.

5.  Sanctity of Life

The Bible is clear on the value of life from conception. “For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb” (Ps. 139:13). A leader’s stance on abortion, euthanasia, and protecting the innocent is crucial. A candidate who disregards the sanctity of life may not make decisions that reflect compassion and justice.

6.  Work Ethic and Self-Reliance

Scripture praises diligence and condemns laziness. “He that tilleth his land shall be satisfied with bread: but he that followeth vain persons is void of understanding” (Prov. 12:11). A candidate’s policies should promote hard work and personal responsibility rather than fostering reliance on government assistance. The Bible encourages individuals to be productive and proactive in their labor (Prov. 13:4).

7.  Justice and Crime

God is a God of justice. “For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our king; he will save us” (Isa. 33:22). This verse underscores the importance of righteous judgment. Leaders who are lenient on crime may not reflect God’s principles of justice. A candidate should uphold laws that maintain order and punish wrongdoing to protect society.

Upholding Freedom and God’s Role

Candidates should be evaluated on their policies regarding freedom and whether they encourage reliance on God or government.

8.  Religious Freedom and Obedience to Laws

Respect for religious freedom and adherence to laws are crucial indicators of a candidate’s values. Romans 13:1-2 states, “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.” A leader who shows disdain for existing laws or the Constitution may pave the way for a government that seeks to replace God’s role in people’s lives with state control. This approach can erode personal faith and accountability.

9.  Associations and Influences

A candidate’s associates can reveal much about their principles. “Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners” (I Cor. 15:33). If a politician surrounds themselves with individuals who live in opposition to biblical values, it suggests that these lifestyles are acceptable to them. Conversely, a leader whose circle upholds morality is more likely to pursue policies that align with godly living.

Stewardship of the Body and Health Policies

Caring for one’s body is an act of respect for God’s creation. The Bible states, “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?” (I Cor. 3:16). Policies that support or trivialize drug use, for instance, are contrary to God’s command to keep our bodies holy.

10.  Stance on Drug Use

A leader’s position on drugs can impact public health and social order. Policies that promote or tolerate drug use can lead to widespread consequences. Leaders should advocate for policies that encourage healthy living and guard against substance abuse.

Choosing Wisely and Standing Firm

Choosing who to vote for should be approached with prayerful consideration and discernment. Christians are called to seek wisdom, aligning their choices with the values of the Bible. While no candidate will align perfectly with God’s Word, we should strive to support those whose actions, beliefs, and policies reflect biblical teachings as closely as possible.

Voting with a clear conscience means evaluating candidates not by popularity but by how they align with the Word of God. The adage “A man that stands for nothing will fall for anything” serves as a powerful reminder that Christians must stand firm in their faith. By choosing candidates who uphold righteousness, we can fulfill our role as representatives of Christ in the public sphere.
